The Start

Jennie_Kate

It all began when I was working as a florist. I started gaining a passion for flowers and learning how to do floral arrangements. Once spring started, the vegetable plants started coming into the store and I decided to start my own garden. My father helped me make a raised garden bed where I planted 1 basil plant, 6 large tomato plants, 2 grape tomato plants, 6 cucumber plants, a couple lettuce plants and a few green peppers.

I shortly noticed that different plants had different ways of growing.

The large tomato plants needed a lot of support while the grape tomatoes need very little. The Lettuce started attracting slugs, cucumbers grew, expanded and grasped onto anything near them while the peppers minded their own business. I learned quickly that a fence of some sort needed to be put up to deter deer and my dog coby.

My dad helped me dig some holes and we placed some iron rods around the corners and put up a black plastic fence. The cucumbers grasped onto it and grew up the side of it. It was the first time I had seen any plant do something like this but also hold the weight of a cucumber at the same time without falling off.

That summer I lived off of salads, and I loved it. It was something about going outside and being able to pick the food right there and then, and eat it.

My small raised bed grew and grew, and I knew that the following year I wanted to plant more.
