Sundays are for Exploring Part 1: NY Botanical Gardens

The New York Botanical Gardens, Bronx, NY. Part 1.

This past weekend I traveled over to the New York Botanical Gardens. For those of you who don't know where that is, it's located in Bronx, NY. It's been around for 125 years and has over one million plants. This past weekend their roses were in full bloom and the peonies opened the previous week (end of May). The rose garden was packed with tons of people, located in the center was the pavilion, and inside they had a harp, a violin, a opera singer and two ballerinas dancing around the outside. They had a tour every two hours or so and also a free raffle to win a white rose 2 quart plant. They had, what seemed to be over 1000, roses in all colors, scents, heights and stages. Climbing, bushes, single petals and double petals. (650 to be exact) Here is a video that shows it in more detail from the NYBG website:  https://youtu.be/Ijeqs3Bf-D4

Walking in the scent is to die for, not over whelming but just strong enough that you don't want to leave. I couldn't have asked for better weather! Sunny around 70 degrees, perfect!

If you ever plan on going I highly suggest wearing sneakers, a back pack and lots of water!!! They do sell water there, but it is on the pricy end (5$ for a small bottle). Wear lots of sunscreen and a hat! They have a tram that stops at various places that you can get on and off if you choose not to walk or get too tired. They also have a kids section with fun activities. They have adult courses and night events through out the year, learn more about everything here: www.nybg.com

This past weekend was also the beginning of Chihuly, Life size glass blown sculptures throughoutthe garden and green houses by artist Dale Chihuly. You can see some of the sculptures below in the pictures.

I've been here a hand full of times and I thought it might be time I become a member. So I signed up which gave me a couple of parking passes, guest passes and 20% off the gift and floral shop the day of signing up! Of course I bought a few things... I couldn't resist. I hope you enjoy my pictures I took! If you ever decide to visit, defiantly look at their website, they have a ton of information that is very useful, and even if you don't visit, you can still learn a lot about the NYBG :)

Chihuly Sculptures:

Dale Chihuly "Float Boat" 2014 Blown Glass and Wooden Boat

In 1995 while in Nuutajarvi, Finland, Chihuly made temporary installations along the nearby river. He tossed glass into the river and let it float downstream, where it was collected and returned in wooden rowboats, inspiring his Boat installations.

David Chihuly: Koda Study #1, 2017; Koda Study #2, 2017. Polycarbonate and steel.

Chihuly revisits his 1975 Artpark installation, an environmental artwork of handblown glass sheets placed in the natural lanscape. Koda Study #3 is on view in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory Courtyard's Tropical Pond.
