Dr. Samuel Ramsey
Last night's bee meeting was a huge learning experience and an eye opening presentation from the well renowned speaker Dr. Samuel Ramsey. He completed his PhD in 2018 from the University of Maryland focusing on insect research as well as studying entomology at Cornell University focusing on predatory/parasitic insect behavior. 🧠 One of the best presentations I’ve ever seen, hands down. ✋🏼 He talked about his current focuses on the effects of the honey bee parasites, the Varroa destructor. 🔎 Did you know that mites don’t feed on the blood of honey bees? They actually feed primarily on the honey bee fat body tissue and not hemolymph! He proved through his experiments and studies that this Varroa mite, 🦠 who all Beekeepers quickly learn to hate, is the single driver of the global honey bee health decline. The amount of information Dr. Samuel Ramsey has discovered and shared is ground breaking. If you ever have the opportunity to see him speak in person, I highly recommend going!!! 📚🔬
