The Garden in February
Spring is a blink away and if you haven’t already started it’s time to get planning.
Here are the Top 5 things to do to prepare your garden:
Ordering Seeds
As seed catalogs are starting to arrive in the mail, it’s very easy to just order an abundance of seeds (trust me). Try only ordering the seeds you have space for or certain vegetables you actually like to eat.
Find Your Zone
Based on the location of where you are depends on your last frost date, meaning after that date it’s safe to plant everything outside. You can certainly plant before this however you must keep an eye on the weather to see if it will drop over night. If it does, seedlings most likely will die. To find your zone simply search “gardening zone “town, state”. It will let you know you zone, or type in last frost date for “town, state”.
Clean Up
Take a look at your garden and start cleaning up weeds, sticks or any debris that maybe have tumbled into your garden space.
Soil Test
Its recommend testing your garden soil every 3-5 years to see what nutrients or organic materials it needs and which it has too much of. You might learn, for example, that your soil is very high in phosphorous, so you would avoid adding fertilizers that contain a lot of it. I recommend searching your state soil testing options, in CT, the University of Connecticut does soil tests for $15.
Soil in the Garden
Once you get your soil test back start adding the recommended nutrients back into your soil. I always add organic matter I find on or around our property. Twigs, leaves, compost and bark,
